The New Hampshire Association of Special Education Administrators (NHASEA), in partnership with The Center for Secondary School Redesign (CSSR), is offering the Annual Level II Academy for Experienced Special Education Administrators. The academy consists of six sessions, starting in December and finishing in May, facilitated virtually through full-day webinars, through the GoToWebinar platform, allowing anyone in Montana or NH to join us from remote locations. The first session will take place December 15, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and is limited to people working in New Hampshire and Montana with at least three years of experience. Future programs will be open registration. The virtual design was created to make it possible for those in remote locations to attend. These will be highly interactive sessions, with lots of opportunities for questions and discussion.

This six-session academy is a leadership development course grounded in the research on top-performing special education administrators conducted by Dr. Bill Bryan, Vice President of CSSR, in cooperation with Dr. P. Alan Pardy, Executive Director of NHASEA. Their nationwide research examines the knowledge, skills and talents of special education administrators, especially these apply to the application of influence and leadership in their positions. Session content is applicable not only for administrators working in special education roles, but for those in district and school leadership positions as well – particularly if they use informal influence in their professional work. Academy participants are eligible to receive 3 Graduate Education credits from Keene State College.

What do you think of when you hear the word “leadership”? Like most of us, you probably imagine an inspiring, energetic, convincing individual. Well, it’s all this and MORE. Anecdotes and inspirational stories abound, but in fact, there are very few actual research studies that define ‘effective’ leaders and what they actually do.

We are offering a research-based Academy for a small number of educational leaders, starting in November. The content of this Academy is shown below. If you want to learn about a research-based approach to special education leadership, please join us this year.

The content is as follows:

  • Each session will build upon previous sessions
  • Each participant will receive his/her own leadership profile, based on the Decision Driver Inventory (DDI) and the Planning Style Inventory (PSI)
  • Sessions will be interative, allowing time for teams of 3-5 individuals to learn and practice their knowledge of various leadership theories
  • Understanding of how the KSTs (Knowledge, Skills and Talents) of a District Level Special Education Administrator have been identified through a two-year research project
  • Competency-based instruction that will allow each participant to identify discrepancies in his/her performance against the level of the “role model” developed by CSSR and NHASEA
  • Project-based learning, through inter-state connection (NH and Montana)

The skills you will take away from this Academy include:

  • Awareness and description of your own “leadership” skills, based on a research-based model
  • Understanding of the “role model” of a District Level Special Education Administrator (DLSEA)
  • Strategies to increase your own competencies in the areas of Influence, Collaboration, Communication, Problem-solving, and others
  • Ability to communicate leadership theory and practice to colleagues
  • A personal improvement plan, based on information from research conducted by the Center for Secondary School Redesign (CSSR) and the NH Association of Special Education Administrators (NHASEA)

If this sounds like something you would like to be part of, please join us by completing the registration form below, or by going to www.nhasea.org and clicking the “trainings and events” tab – there you will see NHASEA Academies.  Please be sure to select Level II Director’s Academy.
