Description:

The role of special education administrators has become increasingly more stressful over the past decade.  This year, more than ever, supporting and leading our special education teachers and related service providers has become much more complex due to a variety of factors: student behaviors are more challenging, caregivers are harder to engage, and school systems have been forced to operate with fewer resources. Even prior to the global pandemic, civil unrest, and toxic divisiveness that has engulfed our country, teachers and administrators were facing burnout.  Special Education Teams have gone above and beyond during the pandemic, leaving many burnt out and with little time to process the events of the past year. Prolonged and intense stress has a deleterious effect on cognition and behavior, and have resulted in staff turnover and attrition that has produced a crisis of its own. We can’t ask educators to carve the time and space for self-care outside of the work setting unless we are willing to make the commitment to creating healthy organizations for our staff (and students). This introductory session will focus on the elements of organizational health, the important role of special education administrators in supporting staff who are traumatized and invite participants to begin exploring a plan for supporting educator health in their own settings.
